Australia Awards Scholarships, formerly known as Australian Development Scholarships (ADS), are awarded to citizens of developing nations, with a focus on the Indo-Pacific area, so that they may attend an accredited university or TAFE in Australia to pursue an undergraduate or graduate degree.
Scholarships from Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade are offered for an extended period of time.
In accordance with bilateral and regional agreements, they hope to help Australia’s development partners.

Scholarship Value/Duration
- Tuition in full.
- Establishment allowance–a one-time payment to help with living costs, books, and other educational necessities; return air travel–payment of a single return, economy class flight to and from Australia using the most direct route;
- The department will set the rate for the Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE), which is paid every two weeks.
- The Australian government mandates that all international students participate in the Introductory Academic Program (IAP) before beginning their formal academic studies in Australia.
- International Medical Insurance (IMI) during the length of the award (for award holder only) offered to pay for the student’s standard medical expenses (with the exception of pre-existing conditions).
- All costs associated with taking a Pre-Course English (PCE) exam Scholarships for Postsecondary Education (PSE) are provided to students pursuing postsecondary education in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
- Eligible research students may receive funding for one round-trip economy class flight through the most direct route to their country of citizenship or within Australia for fieldwork (for research awards and Masters by coursework which have a research component when fieldwork is obligatory).
Scholarship Eligibility
To be considered for this Scholarship, applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years old on February 1 of the scholarship year;
- Be a citizen of a participating country (as listed on the Australia Awards website) and applying for the scholarship from their country of citizenship;
- Not be a citizen of Australia, hold permanent residency in Australia, or be applying for a visa to live in Australia permanently;
- Not be married to, engaged to, or the de facto of a person who holds, or is eligible to hold, a permanent residency visa in Australia. Program Areas may not know this until they apply to specific schools for placement;
- Meet all Department of Home Affairs requirements for a Student Visa. Not applying for a scholarship at a lower academic level than already achieved (e.g., applying for a Master’s scholarship when they already hold a PhD);
- Disclosing to the Program Area any connection or relationship to staff employed at Program Areas (including locally engaged staff at post);
- And disclosing to the Program Area any manpower connections to the Program Area.
